Vietnam ruined the Democrats, as Brazeale has lucidly pointed out.

Before Vietnam, Democrats were not reticent to use military power. Afterwards, the sight of blood makes them blanche, a modern Teutonic response that is totally at odds with the current threats.

I don't see much chance of it mattering if the Dems do "wake up". Rebuilding Iraq falls under national security/foreign policy, and the Dems aren't even in that contest right now. They have a better chance with Gephart's health plan and praying that the international situation settles down one way or another by 2004.
