Understand. That was the best way to handle it.

Now we are faced with the decision. Do we want to continue to be invested in a company run by someone who expects such compensation, and run by a BOD that is apparently prone to dole it out.

I think my answer is no at this point in time.

This might signal a huge change in the way the business is run. I was quite happy at the way AMAT was managing operating cost and expenses over this protracted downturn (and the prior one). It showed a strong sense of responsibility to the investor. Not letting operating losses drag on, being quickly proactive in sizing the business, etc. To me this compensation package could be the signal that next time it won't be like this. Irresponsibility and absurd executive greed just entered the building.

I apologize for stepping into this fray just when it's starting to wind down <bg> but the thing that bothers me the most is that by granting options such as this, it ultimately creates selling pressure on the stock. Aside from the financial performance of the company, as the float increases price appreciation is inhibited. I have a lot of friends in the tech industry and most sell their stock (created after exercise) after a fairly short holding period. They have been burnt over the past three years and don't want to go through that again.
