Actually, the dictatorship comparison fits here better than it does iHub. I've previously described this model as a "benign dictatorship". Though I'd agree that iHub used to have a problem with moderators controlling board content by deleting posts that weren't "positive affirmations about pet stocks", that probably no longer exists and hasn't for quite some time. EDIG is a good example, and very recent. It was happening there, Matt was restoring the posts, then when the EDIG community (a sizable community) collectively "threatened" to leave if Matt didn't quit restoring those posts or if he didn't remove the specific posters, he thumbed his nose at them and showed them the door. Matt's intentions were never to let touts control content. Instead, he trusted too much in the goodness of his fellow man (unwise, especially when money is involved) and felt that a site should only be a platform and that the participants should make it what they want. There's a lot to be said for that, but it gets abused, Matt has seen that and had to personally deal with it, and the abuse of the model no longer happens. It gets attempted. It isn't gotten away with. And it's attempted far less frequently than it used to be. It's not even close to being the same site it was 2 years or even 1 year ago.

Thanks for the clarification and the apology. I don't know what you mean by "personalize this." Could you clarify what you meant? As for your query about whether or not your "little hitlers" metaphor caused a twinge of recognition with me: what it caused was recollection of the horrors of Nazi Germany, the persecutions, the invasions of neighboring countries, the savage and horribly cruel torture and murder of millions of innocent souls. Other than that I have never started a moderated thread, so presumably your comments wouldn't have been applicable to me even if I was posting on Raging Bull or Yahoo. Does that help you understand what I meant?
