There are quantitative measures which can be compared: number of homeless people, percentage of destroyed homes and public buildings, of destructed industry.

Comparing present day politicians to Hitler and present day politican parties to the Nazis isn't ipso facto ignorant -- intelligent comparisons are never ignorant -- and there are intelligent comparisons to be made, sometimes, e.g., the Ba'athist party can be intelligently compared to National Socialism and other forms of fascism, and so can certain fundamentalist Muslim factions.

Please notice that I am not denying that stupid comparisons are more common.
