That would be up to you. I think it would probably depend on the person's comfort level when troubleshooting. If you don't use Compaq's stuff you will probably not get any tech support from them if you have a problem.

How do I get Compaq's proprietary drivers, etc. installed if I go with the retail WIN XP Pro?

All the drivers should be available from the Compaq site or the hardware manufacturer.
