Less Volatility

Last week, a measure of the Nikkei 225 Stock Average's volatility, or swings in value, fell to its lowest reading this year: 12.4 percent. The gauge is based on performance during the previous 10 days of trading, and shows how much the average might fluctuate at an annual rate.

Volatility last bottomed at 11.3 percent in December as the Nikkei fell for nine days in a row, its longest losing streak in 11 years. The index spent the next 2 1/2 months in a range of 8300 to 8800 before sinking to a two-decade low in March.
