I suspect its more a case of certain wealthy folks who have much influence with the govt of France who benefit.

French have NO TAX ADVANTAGES in Monaco. That is why, there are very VERY few French people living in Monaco. And those are almost exclusively French with other passports.

I never said the beneficiaries were French though some might be.

How about you look it up, if you are so interested? If you are not going to take my word for it that France benefits from the existence of Monaco, and put up misinformed objections, you can at least try to read up on the subject a bit.

Hey, I see you can't think of any reason why France would benefit from Monacan quasi-independence either. OK, I did some research:

Area - comparative: about three times the size of The Mall in Washington, DC
...
Population: 31,693 (July 2000 est.)
...
Ethnic groups: French 47%, Monegasque 16%, Italian 16%, other 21%

(Hey, what the heck are all those French doing there? You said there were hardly any French there. Oh I get it - the population is so small, 47% is still hardly anybody. 16% of 31,693 means there are only about 5,071 Monegasques.)
...
Legal system: based on French law; has not accepted compulsory ICJ jurisdiction

(That's okay, America hasn't accepted the ICJ either, I think. Of course, this makes Monaco an outlaw state like us, you realize. <g>)
...
Economy - overview: Monaco, situated on the French Mediterranean coast, is a popular resort, attracting tourists to its casino and pleasant climate. The Principality has successfully sought to diversify into services and small, high-value-added, nonpolluting industries. The state has no income tax and low business taxes and thrives as a tax haven both for individuals who have established residence and for foreign companies that have set up businesses and offices.

Tax haven! Hey, that sounds exactly like what I was getting at. What an ignorant website, huh?

Exports: $NA; full customs integration with France, which collects and rebates Monegasque trade duties; also participates in EU market system through customs union with France
Imports: $NA; full customs integration with France, which collects and rebates Monegasque trade duties; also participates in EU market system through customs union with France
...
Military - note: defense is the responsibility of France

He laughed at first, and then said "Us Americans, we are not bad people, but we tend to be very misinformed about the rest of the world. It is sad that this guy is so ignorant, not to mention arrogant and conceited. But we are not all like that..." etc...

You realize he was probably after something, don't you? (wink wink) Hope I helped him out some by playing the heavy so he could play the sensitive broadminded good guy. Unfortunately I don't get anything out of this.
