If you guys are going to do any pre-migration tweaking, how about taking a few minutes to tweak these puke colors out of the header in favor of just about anything else. Maybe a really light blue on a temporary basis? A medium gray?

Also, since you are in touch with whomever at INSP changed the UI, how about digging up the backed up UI that was running prior to the recent downgrade and put that back up? You might get a better functioning search engine without having to do any tweaking at all.

So, why migrate to Microsoft, Bob?

IMO, you are just asking for trouble.

Look into MySQL. It may be a more appropriate database than either Oracle or SQL Server.

MySQL is the speed king for "read mostly" applications. It is much, much faster reading than anything else going, while it is slower writing than most.

And, of course, you can migrate the database to a more familiar environment without taking the web front end out of the Unix environment.

If ASP is the issue, I believe you can get ASP for Unix. Why, yes, it's offered by Sun, and I suspect third parties as well:

Woohoo! I'm out of touch for a week, and look what happens! SI Bob has come home!

Congratulations, Bob! How perfect that you'll now be the one to guide SI back to its pre-eminence among stock talk bulletin boards! WTG!
