I remember watching the last day of the Democrat convention in 1972 (when conventions were still worth watching). It was while the delegates were engaged in two crucial activities: Catching an early plane home, and blessing Crazy Tom Eagleton for VP.

Some wise-guy college kid (probably an alternate whose delegate had left to beat traffic) cast his 1/2 vote for Mao Tse Tung for VP. I thought it was absurd at the time, and the Republicans should have used the footage (though they didn't. Bob Dole probably talked them out of it).

But seeing how the Democratic party has evolved over the last 30 years, the 1/2 delegate vote may have been hauntingly predictive...
