I teach part time, and I teach high school English. I have 20 freshmen (that class is capped at 20). I have 33 sophomores in my 6th period class, and 31 in my 5th period. So really I have 84 students, total, in my charge. I feel a responsibility to keep in touch with all the parents whose children are getting a D or lower. I also feel I need to commend students who do well- so I write or call those parents as well (as well as awarding a "student of the month" commendation, to the top student in each section). Some students are on behavior plans, so even though they now have passing grades, I am in weekly contact with their parents. With double the load I have now, I could not do what I do. I have my own family- and I would have no time for them.

And BTW- my 6th periond class is 3/4's boys, and this is regular English, not honors. I have reading abilities from 3rd grade all the way to 12.9+ (which is where our reading tests top out)
