I believe with the Internet, Art, there were very few places on the planet where people did not become involved in 'trading' stocks one way or another. This may also be the reason why it will take awhile for the market to come back in earnest. Too many of those that invested may have had little or no knowledge of the 'real' underlying value of what they were buying. And today, some of this foam and froth still exists in equity prices.
