Marty, I suggest you try to decide on one item at a time. You could start with a firewall. There are a few posts discussing firewalls here
Subject 53878

If you want more, scan this thread for 'firewall' or 'zone alarm'. siliconinvestor.com

ZoneAlarm

It's a top-notch firewall. Would I recommend it....absolutely. I have used both the free and the Pro versions and both have worked well. As with any software programs there are /were bugs in some versions and one in an earlier version (either that or a setting I could not get right) of ZA Pro forced me to use the free version for quite a while. Which version is best for you? Read this page and use the link at the bottom to see the differences in the three.

Most programs leave traces behind when uninstalling and a registry cleaner (I use jv16 power tools/RegCleaner) helps to clean up these traces. It has a backup that you can use to restore the cleaned files if something goes wrong. If you are unsure what to do with a file it's best to err on the side of safety...leave it there until you've found out more about it. Google can find info on most anything IMO. The same goes for AdAware and Spybot. Great programs. They will generally tell you what kind of file you are fixing to delete. If it's associated with a program you are using, use Google to see if that program will be effected by the deletion. Gator, Kazaa, etc. have spyware in the downloads and may be rendered useless if the spyware portion is removed.

Marty,

This site may be just what you are looking for to compare firewalls and other security related programs.

firewallguide.com

At the bottom of the page are links to other areas of the site that discuss spyware, virus, trojans etc.

4 questions and my rambling answers ...

1- >>>>Firewalls

any is better than none
WinXP has a built-in of sorts
Zone Alarm ---- free is fine, I like/liked it better than Pro ... had no difficulty installing/un-installing/changing/updating any

2->>>>>Anti-Trojan

BoClean is fine as is Pest Patrol, although I'm not sure I know of a bad one .....

3->>>>> Anti-Spy

SpyBot and AdAware are on my do NOT leave home without list ...
I run them BOTH and run them often

4->>>>>Registry Cleaner

Norton SystemWorks 2003 and "one button feature" is the only one I use .. just installed SW2003 on all four of my boxes .. *(yes, I did buy four copies of the software)
