SK to debut full-fledged videophone service SK Telecom, the country's largest mobile carrier, demonstrated yesterday its videophone service, accelerating its bid to allow subscribers to look at recipients in a real-time video streaming while talking to each other over the mobile network. The company said the service is based on cdma2000 1x EV-DO technology, and the full-fledged commercial version will be introduced within next month. Up until now, Korea's mobile carriers showcased laboratory-level videophone technologies, but no carrier has offered a full-fledged commercial version of videophone streaming service. If all things go as planned, SK Telecom will be the first company to provide the real-time videophone streaming service to Korean users, analysts said. SK Telecom said it would accept reservations about the new multimedia service beginning June 2. As soon as the Ministry of Information and Communication gives a green light to the new service, SK Telecom said it would make videophone available in 81 cities within June. The company's current EV-DO service, named "June," allows subscribers to download short video clips and music files. Subscribers should upgrade their phones to use the videophone service. The company said it would target couples who are expected to favor such videophone services by offering discounts. KTF, the country's second-largest mobile carrier, quickly issued a statement saying it is now developing a videophone service that could outsmart SK Telecom. "The company is now working on a videophone technology that pieces together cdma2000 1x EV-DO and W-CDMA networks to offer more reliable services to customers within this year," KTF said. KTF argued that it has already videophone technology based on cdma2000 1x EV-DO networks, and the reason for a delay is to spend more time and resources to offer better videophone services. Both SK Telecom and KTF are planning to launch W-CDMA third-generation mobile services later this year. Korea has more than 32 million mobile phone users through the CDMA networks that were developed by Qualcomm Inc. of the United States. (insight@heraldm.com) By Yang Sung-jin koreaherald.co.kr .
