I'm sure you'll be happy to distinguish American imperialism from Soviet imperialism.

No. In fact, my purpose in asking was to get him - or, since you've stepped in, you - to distinguish between the type of 'imperialism' that the U.S. and the Soviets practice(d)...and that behavior or instinct which, although several Muslim friends and associates have told me that the Holy Land is generally considered to cover the Arabian Peninsula and part of what is now Iraq...have led Bin Laden to pursue efforts as far west of Mecca as Morocco, as far east of Medinah as Pakistan, and indeed to far flung places including the Philippines and central Africa.

I'm pretty sure Thomas M. and I are on the same page on this one. The departure of the Soviets removed the reason for hostilities in Afghanistan, though they did continue in Chechnya.

And I guess that's why all of those Afghanis decided not to go home from their refugee camps in Pakistan.. Because peace "broke out" the minute the Soviets left?

The only you and Thomas are on is the page of propaganda you're trying to wipe your @sses with..

And btw, Al-Qaeda, as an organization, did not exist during the war in Afghanistan. There were foreign volunteers, Bin Laden being one of the wealthier ones, but Al-Qaeda was created AFTER the Gulf War when the US used Saudi territory to evict Iraq from Kuwait (and then remained there to contain Saddam Hussein)...
