Thanks Cow

Look in your control panel for patch #811493. If it's there remove it.

Where in control panel do I find this?

MSFT resource issue.

I have a Dell 450 with 256 meg ram( just ordered 128 more for the limit). About a week ago I ran into a problem openning up Excel 2000 where it freezes (and subsequently crashes the whole system as I can't shut down the one program - ctrl, alt delete ends up doing the crash once its frozen).

While I'm hoping its just a ram memory resource issue which can be solved by purchasing more memory I'm under the assumption its a software conflict. Not sure if its due to my NAV. While I stop virus monitoring the system and then retry I still have the same issue.

Now I reinstalled excel 2000 and it worked once before the problem came back and reinstalling a second time did not good.

The problem 1st started when I had my schwab trading sofware open, with excel, word and explorer.

I checked for viruses and it came up clean.

I actually plan to upgrade my system but not until August - November time frame.

Anyone have any ideas how to help.

Thanks in advance.

Tim

thecow, today I was told 2 new XP critical upgrades are available. I'm holding off for a few days at least to see if they cause problems for others. 811493 is the one we just removed a few weeks ago because it caused the pc to slow down. I wonder if this is a new version. In any case, I don't need it because nobody else comes near my computer [see bolded test below].

Hi Cow,

To Follow-up on my System Restore problem: Checkpoint dates had disappeared. I searched the Windows Knowledge Base and came up with an article that deals with the problem but need help as it doesn't seem to explain what happened.

support.microsoft.com

Specifically SYMPTOMS
When you examine the settings for the System Restore utility, you may observe that System Restore is suspended even though you have enough free disk space on the system drive. If you attempt to start System Restore, you may receive the following message:

System Restore is suspended because there is not enough disk space available on the system drive (drive letter). To restart System Restore, ensure at least 200 megabytes (MB) of free disk space are available on this drive.

Do you want to start Disk Cleanup to free more disk space now?
Yes No
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the following conditions are true:
A drive that is not a system drive that has System Restore enabled on it has reached less than 50 MB of free disk space.
A copy, delete, modify operation was made to a file that is monitored by System Restore on such drive.
This will cause System Restore to suspend across the system

My system is now working fine but I am trying to figure out why this happened. My hard drive is 60 gigs so it's not like I didn't have enough space. System restore is set for maximum space 12%.

I'm not sure what is meant by the second set of potential causes - that is the modification of files that are monitored by system restore.

The only thing I have done recently is to use a portable USB Jump Drive and that would not have enough space if it were being monitored. However, I checked under System Restore settings and this drive does not show up as being monitored.

thanks again.
