Please list the States with regressive income tax structures.

re: "what is wrong about States raising taxes in that States have regressive tax systems whereas the Federal Government has a progressive tax system."

Re: "...whereas the Federal Government has a progressive tax system."

>>> The most recent studies indicate that the federal tax code for individuals is only 'progressive' in nominal terms.

>>> Because the code is larded with so many special loopholes, 'special tax preference items', and other special interest brick-a-brack... in real terms, (after the loopholes are used), the tax SYSTEM for individuals is mostly FLAT top to bottom.

>>> Except for a 'bump' in the effective rates paid by the middle class income earners - who paid, on average, the highest overall tax rates - when real taxes paid are examined, the US tax system is no longer 'progressive' in any significant way. Effective rates paid by the top income earners, and the bottom, are approximately the same.

>>> Please don't repeat the falsehood that our federal tax system for individuals is 'progressive', because it isn't anymore. (It more closely resembles a very flattened bell curve.)

That's why it's better to isolate tax theft at the state and local level. The thieves have to LIVE with the people they rob. All over America you are seeing tax happy governors getting clobbered over the taxes they want to gouge. It's a tangible activity. Those who DO manage to succeed will be permanently OUT of politics-while a flurry of state referendums follow in their wake, to undo the damage they managed to do.

That's a hell of a lot better than letting Tom Daschle and Mad Cow McCain run things...

Perfect example in Nevada: Harry Reid is politically DEAD, and Gov. Kenny Guinn would have taken his place. Not anymore. Guinn couldn't get elected dog catcher-even with casino money. Jim Gibbons will be the new Senator from Nevada in 2005.

In the meantime, Guinn will manage to steal some of our money, but not as much as a federal Congress could have. And his legacy of theft may yet be wiped out by referendum, or a state legislature in 2005 that slashes and burns like a pack of wild Injuns...
