>>It baffles me that people feel it necessary to announce who they are ignoring, and then continue to discuss the person being ignored.<<

I think there are upsides - for example, I've persuaded people to take other people off of Ignore because they apologized, or moderated their tone, or the Ignorer misconstrued the meaning of the Ignoree.

On a moderated board, discussing someone who is Ignored may persuade the moderator to boot them, or at least give feedback, and on an unmoderated board, can be used to persuade the administrator to suspend or cancel membership for TOU violations.

This is a community, albeit a virtual community. We don't just post in a vacuum. Feedback is important, and we all have the right to take part in policing the community. Otherwise we'd be stuck with the horrorshows we've seen on other sites, like Yahoo.

Yes, there are excesses and mistakes - I've made quite a few myself - but on the whole people on SI are well-intentioned and willing to listen to feedback. But the whackos just ruin things for everybody and shouldn't be allowed.
