You'd think they'd know what "ruminants" meant by now, but apparently not. I've been giving a lot of thought to the gas trusts, and reading mightily. Even found the mother lode of US government reports. Putting it together with some stuff I read over on Prudent bear tonight, here's my thoughts, for what they're worth. Apparently, US gas production peaked in 1973. Even with deregulation, opening up vast parts of the Rockies, and allowing grinding up of shale for gas under Reagan in the 80's, production never quite recovered. In fact, it's been steadily falling and existing Canadian supplies are flat, too. Fuel switching, recent milder than normal winters, and the recession of 2001 have all conspired to mask the problem, but one day, a shortage will hit. New homes in the US are going up at record rates, and pretty well all will need to be heated. Even Greenspam talked about it last week. Bottom line? My gas holdings are the stars of my portfolio, even if they paid no dividends. Smart money can see it coming. So should we. Incidentally, you ever cruise Prudent Bear? I love Doug Noland's credit bubble reports. I now know what an asset backed security is (and am confounded that it exists at all!)."Can you see those dark clouds gathering up ahead? They're gonna wash this planet clean like the Bible said. Now you can hold on steady, Try to keep ready, But everybody's gonna get wet. Don't think it won't happen, Just because it hasn't happened yet." - Jackson Browne, "Running on Empty" Of course, JB wrote that song in 1974. We've now had a full passage of Saturn and nothing bad happened, LOL. CD
