The way the story really went Dad Joiner was going to kill himself and was having a little nap before jumping off a pier in Galveston. He had a dream that he found oil somewhere in east Texas and spent the next few months walking the area until he found a likely place. If I remember correctly it was the farm of Daisy May Bradford and they named the first well after her.

It took years for Doc and Dad to get the first hole down and he set out some kind of offering memorandum that was oversubscribed several times. When the local farm hands were not busy they would all lend a hand to put the well down. People would trade Dad's scrip like cash and everybody wished him well but when oil was found there was several lawsuits. The judge had a soft spot for Dad and postponed the trial indefinitely.

Hunt came along and bought dad out for a few million. Dad replied "Boy, I hope you make five million" Hunt made over fifty million from his investment in east Texas. One year Hunt said to his landman, "buy up every oil deal that is floating around these parts" and drill them. The landman knew that Hunt needed some write offs or he was going to pay a big whack of taxes the next year. Everybody including his own landman thought he was crazy. Hunt not only got his write offs he doubled his production and tripled his reserves the following year.
