Empire can bring freedom ????
There are such institutions as empires of freedom. ????

The author of that article, is struggling with the dissonance between imperialism, and the principles the U.S. was founded on. For now, he has decided that "the ends justifies the means". For now, he thinks our soldiers can teach Iraq democracy, if we have Resolve, and a Firm Hand, and Tough It Out. But he's got this sinking feeling, that the future holds guerrilla war against our army, and years of occupation.

Mark Twain, in 1898, struggled with the same question. He initially supported our colonization of the Philippines, and our war against the guerrillas fighting for independence. But then he saw that all the promises were lies, that we were not bringing freedom or democracy, we were bringing tyranny and paternalism. Bearing the White Man's Burden. Mark Twain decided that the ends don't justify the means, and he became a leader of the Anti-Imperialist League.
