Bobby is an interesting case. He was very hard- headed, in fact, and the more compassionate side seemed a late acquisition. The problem is figuring out where he would land. I think a lot of his appeal, apart from the Kennedy mystique, was the sense that he was grappling, but still, it was more emblematic of a mood than programmatic.

I actually worked for McGovern (I was in high school). I had no special fondness for him, and I knew he would lose, but I thought it would be salutary if he did better than expected.
