The Japanese electronics giant said its chip capex for the fiscal year that started April 1 would be $1.5 billion (175 billion yen), while estimated R&D spending would be $1.25 billion.

That is huge news!

I have Sony as #17 for 2003 at $570M USD which was up 14% from their 2002 $500M spent.

#3 is TSMC with $1.25B budget for 2003 CapX.

All else being equal, Sony would move to #3 in spending... but some of us own these stocks because we don't believe current low spending levels will last forever.

I read today they are going to make a future playstation powerful with a recordable DVD!

Now if #1 through 16 can double their capital spending... -snort!
