John > you compare me with a dung beetle? That hurts!

Goldbug / dung beetle --- same class of insects, similar habits, just a different species. One takes the sh1t out of the ground, the other puts it back. Nothing to be hurt about.

> it seems to me that lots of goldbugs are looking for something that provides something of stability that doesn't depend on people since they don't trust people to work things out,

What makes you think that goldbugs are unique in that regard?

> Is that a good basis for making investment decisions? Probably not.

These days any decision is as good as any other so far be it for me to say whether it is or it isn't. In fact, I think the expression, "the blind leading the blind", couldn't be more apt.

> here is a recent article suggesting the entire deflation issue is something of a red herring.

Paper money is the sea in which the red herring of deflation swims.

In my opinion, however, deflation is not a red herring but is, like bin Laden, a spook which enables the US government to do something it wants to without letting the people know the real reason, in this instance, print and print and print.

Interesting article, but as I see it, it doesn't make any difference what value the USD is against any other currency, or gold for that matter, because the US has a unique economy.

The US produces only one good which is its principal export --- paper money. If the USD is cheap, the US government will print some more, if expensive, they will print some more. So, what's the difference.

The US economy is not dependent on industrial production or a balance of trade so who cares --- only the goldbugs and the foreigners --- the goldbugs because they have some kind of hang-up about a Gold Standard while the foreigners are pissed off because they have to produce goods and compete to sell them and the Americans don't. In fact, the Americans enjoy the fruits of the everyone else's labor and it costs them sweet Fanny Adams to do so. Whether one likes them or not, one has to admire the Americans for enslaving the rest of the world. (Of course, the American people themselves, presumably because they go around waving those little flags, don't realize their banks have enslaved them in an identical way --- only they have to borrow and buy while everyone else has to make, sell and lend)

What a beautiful scam --- and there you are trying to clean it up. Trying to bring the Gospel into the House of Sin (Big Satan, to some). Maybe you have been watching too many Hollywood movies --- and thinking they were true.

Now don't be hurt! I'm only teasing.
