Remember Kenneth, Reducing the tax burden will help control federal spending. Without the specter of deficits, lawmakers lose the will to say no to special interests and pork-barrel projects. In the three years since the surplus materialized in 1998, inflation-adjusted federal spending has grown twice as fast as it did during the three prior years when the government was running a deficit.

Kenneth, Remember also that Clinton wanted to raid Social Security in a phony scheme to retire federal debt in exchange for a mountain of IOUs, which do nothing to head off the large cash deficits facing Social Security in then years ahead.
