Birim Goldfields: 5,000-Metre Drill Programme Underway
5/29/03

MONTREAL, CANADA, May 29, 2003 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) --
Birim Goldfields Inc. ('Birim') (BGI:TSX) is pleased to report that it has commenced a 5,000-metre reverse circulation ('RC') drilling programme targeting several advanced-stage gold prospects on its Dunkwa concession and Bui District properties in Ghana. Birim recently entered into an agreement to sell its interests in the Dunkwa concession to Golden Star Resources Ltd. ('Golden Star') for cash and royalty considerations (see the April 16, 2003 press release for further details), however, in order to facilitate the timely exploration of the advanced Mansiso gold target, located within the Dunkwa concession, Birim has already completed the RC drill program, the costs of which will be reimbursed by Golden Star upon formal closing of the agreement.

The drill programme consisted of a series of twelve RC holes testing the lateral and depth extensions of the Mansiso gold prospect. Mansiso has recently been the focus of small-scale informal mining activities and recent grab samples collected by Birim have returned assays up to 88 grams per tonne gold from highly altered graphitic meta-sediments similar to those hosting the major producing gold deposits occurring along the Ashanti Structural Break. The results from the drill programme are anticipated within two weeks.

The RC drill is currently being mobilised onto the Bui District properties. The first of a series of prospects to be drilled will be Brohani, where soil sampling has delimited a ten-kilometre long gold-in-soil anomaly, as defined by the 0.5 gram per tonne gold contour, underlain by Tarkwaian conglomerates. The southern portion of the Brohani anomaly yielded gold values up to 2.5 grams per tonne in soils and it is this sector that will initially be drilled by way of thirty 50-metre holes drilled at 30-metre intervals along five lines 100 metres apart, for a total of 1,500 metres.

'With our strong balance sheet and potential flow of continuing royalty revenues from the Dunkwa property, we are well positioned to explore our substantial portfolio of gold prospects that we have identified within our Bui District properties,'said Mr. Denis Simoneau, President or Birim. 'We are very excited about our prospects and assure our shareholders that we will be aggressive in our drilling activity, this programme being the first phase in a series of drilling campaigns.'
