French Unemployment Is Highest in Almost Three Years (Update3)

May 30 (Bloomberg) -- French unemployment rose to the highest in almost three years in April, giving the European Central Bank another reason to lower interest rates next week.

The number of people looking for work climbed by 7,000 from March to 2.512 million, based on International Labor Organization standards, the Labor Ministry in Paris said. The jobless rate remained at 9.3 percent.

France's unemployment rate has exceeded 9 percent since June and Germany's may have stayed at 10.7 percent in May, economists said before figures next week. Job losses are eroding confidence among European consumers at a time when the euro's advance is helping reduce inflation, giving policy makers scope to trim rates.
