According to our local little paper that covers a 5 town area in western Connecticut, there have been 26 reported bear sightings in my town in the past year. 812 for the whole state. They don't give any statistics to compare with previous years, but they note the steady increase the past few years.

They quote a wildlife biologist - "The bear population is growing because of forest regrowth, which happens over decades of farmland abandonment."

Article also says 80% of bear sightings involve bird feeders.

Shooting the bear is the best solution. Forget bear spray because you have to get too close and if the wind is from the wrong direction you could be in a lot of trouble. A lot of people here instead of packing guns carry bear bangers or marine horns.
