Yes, actually, it is thoughtless of us. And dangerous for our own longterm interests. When all the astronauts have grenades, the fat astronauts better make sure none of the other astronauts are starving. Damage Control, Crisis Management, threatening the starving astronauts, is not the way to handle the problem. Saying, "I've got 2 grenades, so quit complaining. No, I won't share my food with you", is no longer a tenable strategy.
