"come on! you're on VACATION GIRLFRIEND!" she chided. the flight from houston to belize too an hour and 55 minutes, we arrived 15 minutes early. we had planned to take a cab to the highway (about two miles) and flag down the first bus going north to corozal. when you've live your life as piously as i have <g> and held your mouth in the right position for about a year, good things come your way (because i'm ok, and doggoneit, people like me). in the middle of the flight (two thirds of the way over the gulf of mexico) mary comes tromping up the aisle and says, "hey dusty and kath - we just got you a ride to corozal!" the man they were sitting next to lives in corozal, had his car at the BZE airport, and graciously offered to take us with him. i went back and kissed his hand ever so sweetly and introduced myself. harry was born in honduras. he moved to belize when he was eleven and has lived here ever since. he's well travelled though and has a daughter who lives in LA. the trip o corozal was wonderful. we got well acquainted with harry and he told us everyhing i think of to ask him about on the way up. it was about an hour and a half drive in his airconditioned toyota camry - vs. riding in a rickety old non air-conditioned school bus for three or four hours. he dropped us off at the hokol kin guest house, a place he recommended. our room is on the upper level of a two story building right on the waterfront. there's a great porch with a beautiful view of the turquoise bay and we catch the most wonderfully soothing breezes all day and night - this is paradise. i tried dilligently to give harry gas money but he absolutely refused, saying "no, no, no, no, no. i was coming here anyway." at least i was able to pay for about a dozen mangoes for him when we stopped at a roadside stand on the way up. i picked up a watermelon from a vendor this morning and took it over to his house (two blocks from where we're staying). we were hoping to meet his wife (they've been married 49 years). we did meet his dog - a beautiful rotweiller - and we left the watermelon on the front porch. yesterday afternoon/evening we stopped in to nestor's hotel bar - the website said it was air conditioned and we were getting hot and muggy from walking around town. the airconditioners weren't on - think they sell more beer with them off anyway. we had our first taste of belikin beer - i have a new favorite brand!!! mucho delicioso. we ordered some chips and salsa and went out to the front porch where the breeze was blowing from off the water. after three or four belikins we were joined by sam and barbara, steve, tanya and terry, this is a whole other story - the most ecclectic table of people i've ever sat down with in my life - we had several more belikins, rice and beans with pork, and heard stories better than i could ever make up. what a grand time my attorney had spewing barbs about the bushies to the ex-pats and belizeans last night. we had a wonderful breakfast at our hotel this morning. earlier i'd been over to the main boat dock at the water taxi left for san pedro - i want to check with them and make sure they were running on sunday too. they said they'd be at the dock at about 6:45 am for a 7 o'clock departure. on the way back i walked by the fish market - i took a picture of a fishing sailboat where a fisherman was throwing fish "parts" and a pelican was catching them. he looked up and smartly said, "next time you take my picture, i CHARGE you." i smiled back and said, "there ain't no next time - you've just broken my camera!!" he smiled but sorta frowned too - he was trying to be sorta unfriendly but i didn't let him. i'm at charlotte's web (internet cafe) right now. kath's napping in the sea breeze. gotta go get her and seek out more belikins. the weather is finally HERE... wish you were beautiful. love, polvo
