Praising Internap

Just read your article about ISPs ("North American ISP Survey: Looking for Number Two," September 2002), and I would've been another one of the Internap write-ins if I had known about the survey.

We use them to connect all of our offices, and their quality, customer service, and responsiveness have been superb. They are incredibly proactive.

For example, one of our offices had its power turned off over the weekend, which meant that its router was down. We were immediately notified by Internap that while the Private Peering Arrangements (PNAPs) were up, our connection was down. They e-mailed, telephoned, and beeped us.

Another time, they notified us at three in the morning of a service outage due to a local loop cut.

We also get regular updates from them on outages and work being done on all the major Tier-1 providers.

They have a unique view into the Internet because they hook into all of these backbones and use their assimilator software to choose the best route.

We're going to be using them shortly for a new managed VPN service that we're rolling out.

They've partnered with Blue Ridge Networks, one of the top VPN providers to all of the three-lettered federal agencies.

In the long term, we also plan to do video conferencing with them and their partner WireOne, because the quality, speed, packet loss, and latency are so good.

I also want to mention their portal, called PathView, which gives you terrific details and charts on your Internet usage, the path your traffic is taking across the backbones, and why Internap chose that path and speed.

All in all, Internap is a terrific company that we trust with our mission-critical Internet infrastructure. You do pay a bit more, but it's worth the peace of mind.
