Hi, Baldy. I have come to appreciate your affection for America. Being a transplanted Brit, you have a bit more credibility in that area than many natives.

I Believe It Is Necessary To Distinguish The Two.

I have read little on SI that could or should be considered " Anti -American ".Challenging the Government of the day should not be considered Anti -American, or Anti -Canadian,nor Anti -British nor anti -anything.

I do believe some Canadians and Some Americans get confused on this issue and shoot off on the Country, rather than the current Administration(S),likewise the opposite, such as the case with this fellow called yields.I will take him to task on this if it continues.

We need to be clear on who and what we are agreeing or disagreeing with.I have absolutely no anti-American feelings, but I do not agree with many,if not most, extreme right wing political aspirations and agendas,no more than I do not agree with many,if not most, extreme LEFT wing political aspirations and agendas,in your country,or mine for that matter.

But from the outside looking in,it appears the current administration is indeed following a hard right wing agenda. This is being observed from all over the world,so it is no surprise that Canadians, who probably best know America, as its neighbour, would observe this in magnified form and be more likely to approach issues with our neighbours, regardless of those who would cite " anti -American-ism ".

But what strikes me as unusual,is those who would condemn their own countrymen as " Anti -American ", when they are merely voicing their free opinion on the topic du jour, that happens to be contrary to what the current administration advocates!

NO WHERE in the World do these accusations take place other than in America. When was the last time you heard Canadians or Brits or Aussies slamming each other for being Anti -_______?

We don't get it.

Unless another country tries to dictate domestic policies to us,you can be critical ,and quite often you many find a large contingency who agree with your position, such as with the poor shape of our military,or our position on Foreign Affairs. These are common interests and are fair game as far as most are concerned Same goes for the Mideast situation.Canada continues to play a role there, within its weight class, but most here have other ideas on how things can improve, thus they are interested in learning and helping find a solution through dialogue and discussion.

Bottom line?

Freedom of speech and expression is a Global reality in these days of the Internet, in countries that are fortunate enough to have it.Let’s not undermine these hard fought rights by denigrating those who disagree with us as the preverbal “ ANTI – SOMETHINGS “.Those accusations only serve those who wish to silence freedom of speech and expression.

PS: We should all be aware of sensitivities when it comes to diseases and disasters and the like in each other’s countries, and be careful that we don’t unwittingly say something that could be confused with just being mean spirited .These things can be complex and troubling without the need to make accusations.

Regards,

KC
