The Viet Cong was so totalitarian that we had to terrorize the Vietnamese population with the Phoenix Program to keep them from supporting the Viet Cong? The Vietnamese people were caught in the middle of a war between two diametrically opposed political and economic ideologies carried out by military conflict... The Viet Cong were EVEN MORE BRUTAL in how they would walk through a village demanding tribute, food, and "recruits" to join them.. All on the pain of death should the villagers disobey.. WHEN will you get it through your head that THERE'S A VERY GOOD REASON that people living under communist oppression cast it off as soon as the government lost the means to terrorize them... Merely compare the number of remaining communist states in existence to the number of democracies that have been formed over the past 20 years... In reality, the Viet Cong represented a 3rd-world nation attempting to control itself, Yeah.. tell that to the Montagnards and the Hmong... They didn't get much chance to "control themselves".. And how about the Cambodians who were terrorized by Viet Cong in their cross-border sanctuaries?? A nation does not "control itself" by putting an elite group of ideologues in complete and total power. It does it by forming a government that is accountable to its people through a fair and vigourous electoral process.. Because isn't the population of a country supposed to its owners?? Hawk
