Group files complaint over Edwards' campaign donations

WASHINGTON (AP) - A conservative political group filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Friday, calling Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards a "petty criminal" for accepting questionable campaign donations.

By Scott Morgan, AP USA TODAY

I have been waiting for this shoe to drop. Edwards has played fast and loose with these Law Firm donations.

The complaint asks the FEC to investigate the North Carolina senator, his campaign and the Arkansas law firm Turner & Associates over contributions that came from the firm. Law clerk Michelle D. Abu-Halmeh told The Washington Post in April that her boss, attorney Tab Turner, asked people to support Edwards and assured them they would be reimbursed.

Campaign donors are not allowed to funnel donations through someone else under federal law. Otherwise, donors could exceed the legal contribution limit for individuals, recently raised to $2,000 from $1,000 per election.

After the Post story was published, Edwards' campaign reimbursed the legal firm for $10,000 in campaign donations. Edwards' campaign said it had no way of knowing how the money was raised. The Justice Department is investigating the donations.

A spokeswoman for the Edwards' campaign dismissed the FEC complaint.

"The American Conservative Union is just the latest Bush ally to launch a baseless attack on Senator Edwards," said Jennifer Palmieri, noting that a conservative group has produced a few anti-Edwards ads. "Frankly, our campaign continues to be somewhat flattered to be the source of Republican consternation."

In a statement issued by the ACU, chairman David A. Keene said of Edwards, "He and the people who put together this scheme are lawyers and can have no excuse whatever for their acts."

Circulation numbers are public. The NYT lost 5% circulation in the last six months or year, I forget which. In the same period, the NY Post gained 10% circulation. Andrew Sullivan was all over it, as you may imagine. But that does not mean you are entitled to say that he just made up the circulation numbers.
