I suspect the SI servers are simply suffering from a couple too many kludges used to bandaid the system.

Added to that, the backbone of the Internet has become astonishingly convoluted over the last few years. For instance, when I do a 'trace route' to SI, I find that there are 18 hops between my box and the SI server. That's at least 3 times what it would be in a well designed system.

IDEAL ROUTE:

Bend, OR -> Boise -> Salt Lake City -> Denver -> Kansas City -> SI
