Gottfried, actually the rule is "if the market has gone up 20% on expectation that 2nd Q earnings will be a positive surprise. Then if the earnings are disappointing, selling in May would have been the profitable thing to do."

The rule is still very good, but the trick is to know in advance whether 2nd Q earnings will disappoint or not.

Thanks Gottfried and Kirk for letting me know that chart was of the S&P 500. Early indications for the open tomorrow show another strong move higher is likely:
