They say it is not fair that their property taxes go up just because others decide to move into their area, buy expensive homes, and increase property values, and thus taxes. Why should they have to pay more just because someone else paid a lot for the house down the street?

it seems these people have a very self-centered and naive way of looking at the world that is quintessentially Californian. something has very much changed for them! their net worth has risen considerably. if taxes didn't rise to match the market, you'd still have people living in one-story houses in Manhattan, because they'd "always lived there", and why should they be crowded out by the 12 million "newcomers".

Similarly, why should I pay more year after year because I remodeled my kitchen and painted the walls? My house is still the same size and still hosting the same number of persons. Can you imagine a BMW paying a higher toll than a Toyota?

I think if towns can shut down public schools along with other services that benefit only a specific group of people, then taxes can be assessed fairly on lot size, property type, number of inhabitants, registered vehicles etc.

This way, when you get you tax bill, you will know exactly how much you pay for services like police, fire, public works etc.
