VICTORIA - B.C. NDP interim leader Joy MacPhail announced Tuesday she is stepping down and will not run in the next provincial election, slated for 2005.

MacPhail, 51, is the only NDP member sitting in the legislature. The only other NDP candidate elected in 2001, Jenny Kwan, has been on maternity leave.

MacPhail says being her party's only voice of opposition has presented her with many challenges and days when she feared walking into the legislature to face Premier Gordon Campbell's government.

"There have been moments when I didn't think I'd be able to keep my fear under control and not react physically, like through up-chucking out of fear," said MacPhail.

MacPhail said she'd been encouraged to contest the leadership but believes the party needs new voices, new energy and new leadership.

She was praised by B.C. Finance Minister Gary Collins for her professionalism and hard work in opposition.

"I think she's had a very tough job as leader of the opposition with two people. I know what a tough job that can be even with a larger caucus, so I think she's worked very hard at it," he added.

An NDP leadership convention is scheduled for this November.
