>> the point is that CA rewards a rich person for conspicuous consumption. and by undertaxing the rich consumer, CA steals from the poor (by underfunding its schools). as a separate issue, TX should and will eventually have to institute a state income tax.

Please. Many of the poor in the schools are preventing the people who want to learn from getting a good education. I know I'm making a general statement but heck, it matches with my experience. The lower class kids in the schools (public) I went to were always causing problems. We are kind to keep them enrolled for 13 years so their parents don't beat them at home all day.

The poor are usually poor for a reason. I think we have a good system that warehouses poor kids in places like LA Unified so my kids can have a chance to learn where they will go.

Hi Darfot, The real issue seems to be, the American government would prefer if its citizens are loaded up in debt.

Savers get penalized with every penny saved, while others who are living high off the hog continue to get the government's blessing.

It rewards high-flying, debt-ridden consuming more than saving.

The high-consuming, debt-ridden folks are stealing from the low-consuming folks.

Those with high debt seem to pay significantly less taxes than those people who do not believe in debt.

The issue (as I see it), is the government rewards irresponsible spending, not responsible savings - they prefer a person who is overly, irresponsibly leveraged in debt, whose careless irresponsibility is rewarded with the backup plan of you and me & other taxpayers in the way of them paying less taxes for their irresponsible, high consuming lifestyle. I find it concerning the government forces you and me to pay for people who are overly, highly leveraged in debt whose irresponsible high lifestyles are on the backs of my and your more frugal lifestyles.

The government doesn't distinguish between poor people (who truly deserve assistance) and irresponsble rich and middle-class(*) people (who are leveraged on your & my backs). (*) Gasp, middle-class is the largest voter pool.

But the issue isn't that the rich are stealing from the poor. Last I checked, my take home pay (net pay) was 49%, not including quarterly taxes, not including health care, and at the end of the year, it seems there's always more in taxes. And I don't mind that at all, as long as the money goes to people who need truly need it, but not to debt-ridden irresponsible rich & middle-class people whose backup plans are you and me rather than themselves.

Of course, you could be right though (about rich stealing from the poor), as the highest paid person in a company I know has a take home pay of 88%.

But I see many, many more cases of debt-ridden, high-consuming rich & middle-class people stealing from poor, middle-class, and rich people. The high-consuming, debt-ridden folks pay less in taxes because their lifestyles have gotten way, way ahead of themselves and their backup plans are taxpayers, and they essentially steal from responsible poor, middle-class, and rich people (who have lower lifestyles and work hard to save every penny they have and whose backup plans are themselves.)

So, the issue is: the responsible poor, middle-class & rich people pay more taxes, while the irresponsible rich & middle-class people pay less taxes.

Frankly, this country rewards irresponsible behavior and stupidity. On the other hand, maybe I'm the stupid one for not being irresponsbile.

Regards,
Amy J
