This ties in really well with an economic/environmental story I heard on the radio this morning. The last lumber mill on Mendocino's coast is closing by 8/1; 59 FTE out of work, maybe 5 hired for an inland mill. The reason is an insufficient quantity of local logs to run a stud mill. The spokesman said most of the surviving mills are only working one shift a day, and logs are being imported into Humboldt and Mendocino counties from the Pacific NW. We moved up here just when the logging wars really took off. The environmentalists were screaming about the rampant overcutting, and a timber gap until the next generation of trees grew up. Timber (GP,LP,MXM the biggest players in these two counties said "Bosh; da treez go on forever. They want to take your jobs. They gonna spike yer trees and blow you up.".Enviros said " Who Bombed Judi Bari? We wanna save yer jobs; these guys are gonna cut and run". Guess what? GP/LP cut and ran. MXM ain't doing so hot, and they can't blame it on Headwaters; that only took 10K of their vast holdings. Judi Bari's estate and Daryl Cherney win a $4M suit against the FBI. Anyway, 55 more out of work, but HD is taking over the mt K-Mart inland. Rat
