My hairdresser is Vietnamese. Moved here four years ago, not at all a boat person.

I was saying nice things about the changes in Vietnam, and she jumped all over me (metaphorically speaking), which, considering that she was doing my hair, and "the customer is always right", was rather bold of her, not that I minded.

No, she says, the Vietnamese government is socialist and takes all the money that the people earn. You are lucky to make $100 a month, and if you are really lucky $200 a month.

But, I said, if you have money, wouldn't it be good to retire to Vietnam and enjoy the standard of living?

No, she says, they will take the money from you. They're socialists.

One thing that entrepreneurs understand is "socialist." If you're an entrepreneur (as I am) then it's easy to understand. You work hard, the government takes your money, and you're no better off than someone who doesn't work hard at all. So why bother?
