Bill Gates, who for a decade has been a prolific seller of the shares of Microsoft Corp., has come out against stock sales by insiders at Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. Mr. Gates has sold nearly $1 billion of Microsoft stock this year, according to data compiled by Washington Service. But that didn't deter his investment vehicle, Cascade Investment LLC, from taking a public swipe at Schnitzer Steel insiders who, according to Washington Service data, sold $6.5 million of their company's shares in the past two months. Cascade said Friday in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it had sold some of its Schnitzer Steel shares because of concerns about the independence of the company's board -- and because company insiders were selling stock.
