Granted that the United States is less socialistic than any country in Western Europe, it can be used as a benchmark. It also did not suffer devastation during the Second World War, and, in fact, despite its generosity, gained so much market share in virtue of being intact that it benefited indirectly from the devastation of Europe. Considering all of that, the fact that Western Europe, though mostly lagging behind the United States, has in the long run achieved a similar standard of living pretty much shows that it has not been harmed much by social democracy. It is true that "Eurosclerosis" is a result of going overboard with the Social Welfare State, and has, in the last decade, done some harm. Thus, there is a limit. But it has taken awhile to get a strong sense of the disadvantage.
