that's the 64,000 troy ounce question. the Nasdaq was a bubble. the real estate market is a bubble. the dollar is a bubble. the Hegemony of the United States of America itself is a bubble.

all these things will pass, just as Rome, which was a much more dominant empire than the US, passed. not coincidentally, the gold content of Rome's currency declined in lock-step with the Empire's fall over its final two centuries.

today, history is accelerated. (remember the subtitle to Coupland's Generation X--"Tales for an Accelerated Culture") so naturally, the rise and fall of the United States will happen in a much shorter time frame than in Rome. the end of civilization as we know it is already pretty much guaranteed due to the peaking of oil. our wreckless fiscal, monetary, and geopolitical behavior will just accelerate the end.
