I think it was Hannah Arendt who wrote about the banality of evil.

Yes:

You wish John were around so you could discuss whether evil exists? Don't worry, he's around. He won't let the likes of Derek and me discourage him.

Personally, I don't see where "evil" gets you in the context of Israel/Palestine - both sides - Jew and Muslim - have plenty of True Believers with God on their side and it's getting them nowhere.

Now if we Christians come galloping in to do battle with Evil with our own versions of True Believers with God on our side, I don't think we will accomplish much.

Better to focus on the real universals - law, respect for the rights of the individual, cooperation, tolerance, giving good weight, being a good neighbor, operating by consensus within a mutually agreed-upon framework.

Maybe Mq is right, maybe we should send in the Iroquois.

<the sacrifice of children for political purposes...is repugnant, manipulative of the involved childrens' lack of informed judgment, and inherently evil.>

Their killing is bad.

<...Bush or the Israelis would justifiably assassinate him.>

Our killing is good.

That's the most succinct summary of your position on killing for political purposes.

Fascinating conversation. Keep going.

As for being AWOL, I've actually been somewhat for over a month because an important project simply gobbled almost all my time. It finished up last night, very successfully, drank some champagne, and now am trying to catch up with life. Will now be doing some r and r at the Jersey shore over the weekend and then, sometime next week, may have the time to do more serious posting/thinking when that comes around.

As for the points you make here, if you could keep them in mind, I would like to take a shot next week. It's a set of questions I would like to think about.
