"The two situations actually are similar in many ways. They both are deeply wrapped around religious differences and both involve colonization by foreigners."

The two situations definitely have this in common. It is possible for Irish Catholics and London Protestants to live in relative harmony in the south Bronks. There is no religious reason why the region of Ireland has to stay in the hands of Catholics. The world can take its course and the religious folk can live out their lives according to docrine as long as no controling legal authority tells them they can't cross themselves in worship (or what ever). With the proper level of tolerance there is no reason why the disputed land should be divided up at all. The conflicts have generally been related to oppression of one culture by another. It is fairly easy for members to move and mingle within and among Christian denominations and to socialize themselves to the differences. The disputes can be reduced almost entirely to political in nature.

Likewise it is entirely possible for an Arab and a Jew to live in Miami, shop at the same stores, etc without conflict.

They have some differences as well. The differences in doctrinal ordinances for what Israel has in mind for Zion and what the Muslims have in mind for Islam put them in a kind of struggle that can be managed but not resolved. The ordinances do put claims on geographical regions as well.
The scriptures could probably be shown to be transparent descriptions of the same thing and many people have tried to do just that. With all the cultural animous that exists, it is doubtful that anyone except a Messiah would have a chance at bringing the groups and factions under one agreement.
