Microsoft (MSFT, news, msgs) CEO Steve Ballmer sent an all-company memo to employees stating that the software maker faces significant challenges in a still-difficult economy. "Over the long term, I'm optimistic about our growth opportunities," Ballmer wrote, according to Reuters. "But we face significant challenges in the near and mid term. The overall state of the economy is an issue. As I talk with business customers, there is less passion and enthusiasm for technology, and greater focus on doing more for less."

Oh, I agree, as far as I or anyone I know in the semi business, this move, especially in the equipment makers is nuts. I've wished I didn't have a clue what a semiconductor was, much less anything about the equipment makers, so I could buy these things more easily.

That little dip the S&P did to around 910 in May really nailed my trailing stops. I've had a difficult time getting myself to hold much long since then. With these near vertical moves, any sensible trailing stop on a long hold is too far below an entry price for my tastes. When I do buy long, I set a rigid price target and let it take me out.
