That's what the gov't is there for......so that the rich don't get the upper hand.

The government is there to maintain public order, defend the country and its interests, provide a system of laws and a courts to handle legal disputes and perhaps to provide public infrastructure that can't easily be provided for by the market (like roads). It isn't there to grab money from the wealthy, not can I recall it ever interceding against the wealthy on my behalf except by going after wealthy criminals.

What do you think these trials of Martha Stewart, Ken Lay and other rich are all about?

The power should rest directly with the people whenever possible, instead of some politician or beaurocrat. If the government makes the decision in many cases rather then the individual normally making the decision then personal freedom is reduced.

Its impossible not to reduce some freedoms in a country as big and as complex as ours.

Also it just allows the people with the most pull in government to make the decision and they are often the wealthy anyway, so government is about as likely to intervene against the middle class or poor in favor of some wealthy special interest as it is to help the poor or middle class.

Apparently, you need to get more familiar with the workings of gov't. There is not enough room to list all things that the gov't has accomplished by intervening on behalf of the middle class and/or poor in this country.

Private industry would not be nearly as fair and as generous as it is now without the intervention of gov't. Our lives today are much the richer and healthier because of gov't intervention.

I don't think you have a objective view of the way things work.
