Why didn't Saddam allow the inspectors in, demonstrate to the satisfaction of the UN that he had destroyed all WMD capability, and move on with his life, free of sanctions?

Let me count the possibilities:

1) Saddam actually had WMD but we have't found them yet;

2) Saddam actually had WMD but moved them elsewhere during the prolonged runup to the war;

3) Saddam actually destroyed all WMD long before the war but didn't want to admit it because they acted as a deterrent;

4) Saddam's administration destroyed all the WMD but didn't tell him because of fear that he would kill them;

5) Saddam never actually had WMD but was faking everybody out because he wanted to impress people (see Kim Jong Il);

6) Saddam never actually had WMD but the US, the UN, and every other intelligence agency on earth was fabricating it (especially the Jews, the Zionists, and the Neocons);

7) Saddam was secretly in the pay of the CIA, the Jews, the Zionists, or the Neocons, a puppet whose job was undermining the security of Iraq and the Middle East;

8) The US has discovered Saddam's WMD but is holding back in order to flummox the Democrats in the upcoming election(s);

9) This spot is available for hire.

Re WMD's There is something not logical here.

You're right.

From all the documents found, it seems correct that Iraqis documented everything and therefore ...
Why did he not provide the data on disposition of all the tons of WMD's he had produced to the Inspectors and meet the criterion for disarming? Stop the war

They'd spent ten years hiding evidence of WMDs and that would eventually mean hiding the paper work or destroying it. They even hid stuff under lakes and rivers.

Hussein claimed he had no WMDs but Blix complained the cooperation given to the inspection teams was "not substantive." What are we to think? Hussein will tell anybody anything.... No record of truth telling there.

Leave it be for now. I think the story will come out once the US and Britain have finished interviewing Hussein's generals and associates.

The war hasn't finished. There's lots going on in the Tikrit area and nearby.

Hussein has a history of miscalculation. Remember that he thinks he's smarter than every one and this does lead to huge mistakes.

I think Ken was right. The WMD discussion should be put off for a while.
