Asia shows the way: DoCoMo Aims for All-3G Subscriber Base by 2010
WMRC June 05, 2003
NTT DoCoMo wants to see its entire subscriber base using third-generation (3G) phones and services by 2010, according to the carrier's President Keiji Tachikawa interviewed today in the Asahi Shimbun daily. Tachikawa said that new pricing plans are being drawn up to tempt half its subscriber base on to its 3G FOMA service within two to three years. The operator will also stop investing in 2G networks. At present, DoCoMo has under 500,000 users, though it hopes to see this number climb to 1m by year-end 2003 on the back of attractive promotions and new handsets (see Japan: 2 June 2003: DoCoMo to Unveil New 3G Handsets in Japan </servlet/cats?ID=182724&pageContent=art>). Overall, the operator has 44.7m mobile users.

Elmat: Japan didn't sell the spectrum licenses. They just wanted the 'snowball effect' of the technology over the whole economy.
