Karen, a couple of comments. The clip you took from my post was simply a reply to uw in which the point I wished to make is that her treatment of the impeachment stuff makes her a more sympathetic figure than would otherwise have been the case. I do know that her failure to talk openly about this during her New York Senate campaign in 2000 cost her some votes in an otherwise successful campaign. So I would guess this is a deliberate attempt to get this out before the 04 campaign, and well before she runs for reelection to the senate in 06. Whether she runs for the presidency in 08 is genuinely hard to tell. We can assume she has ambitions in that direction but so much can happen between now and then, it's futile to make serious guesses. As for her political persona, there is no doubt that folk who live on the right hate the very thought. I think both the middle and the left are of mixed minds, obviously for different reasons. She's handled the Senate stuff about as well as it's possible to do so. Done her homework, learned the intricacies of the rules and the personalities to a farethewell, such that she's become a part of the leadership without a formal role. She's also done more of the New York state pothole work than her predecessor Moynihan did. Much to her credit. Right now I don't think her problem is her own persona as it was in 2000. It's rather who will run against her in 06. If she maintains her present level of work, she will have no opposition in the Dem primary. But the Reps could offer either Pataki or Guiliani against her, whichever doesn't run against Schumer in 04. That would be great theater, particularly the latter. Should she survive that, and again, particularly the latter, her national political visibility would increase a great deal. P. S. I see that Bill thinks she is popular on the left. Without going into detail, that's a mixed bag. However, one of the things I keep running into is the number of career women, who are not politically aligned, who are very enthusiastic supporters. That should not be dismissed.
